WHATCAR? Hybrid of year 2018. Hybrid performance comes in the form of a compact electric motor working with the petrol engine to improve fuel economy and lower CO₂ emissions. They also combine to maximise acceleration when required. The petrol engine, electric motor, lithium-Ion polymer battery and dual clutch transmission are engineered to function together with optimal efficiency. The specially calibrated 1.6 l GDI internal combustion engine delivers 105 PS with class-leading energy efficiency. High torque and high efficiency are the principal attributes of the 43.5 PS electric motor. It delivers impressive acceleration when starting, and can add extra power at higher road speeds. The 1.56 kWh high-power battery has superior charge/discharge characteristics, maximizing both electric driving and energy regeneration. While the Eco mode maximizes fuel efficiency, the Sport mode engages operating parameters that modify gear shifting, acceleration, steering feel and digital instruments for a more rewarding driving experience. The maximum torque of the electric motor is available from start-up, resulting in impressive acceleration especially at low speeds. The IONIQ transforms the hybrid driving experience by integrating a 6-speed due clutch transmission (DCT) that delivers smooth and responsive gear shifting. The combination of carefully chosen gear ratios and an intelligent shift strategy allows the IONIQ to efficiently and quickly pick the optimum gear. Finally, the intelligent use of lightweight high-strength steel and aluminium results in a structure that, complemented by multilink rear suspension and a low centre of gravity, provides great stability with enjoyably agile handling.

INTERIOR

Inside the IONIQ, the weight of interior plastics has been reduced by approximately 20% through the use of a material made of recycled plastic
combined with powdered wood and volcanic stone. SE models feature a black cloth seat trim, while Premium and Premium SE offer black leather seat facings.

At the heart of the IONIQ’s driver-centric design, the D-Cut Steering Wheel with chrome-accented spokes helps to convey a dynamic sporty image that defies the convention of hybrid vehicles.

Available on Premium and Premium SE models, this high definition audio system delivers high-quality surround sound through no less than eight speakers, a subwoofer and external amplifier.

EXTERIOR

The sleek, attractive coupé-style silhouette of the IONIQ is designed with aesthetics and efficiency in mind. There are two IONIQ Hybrid wheel designs: The standard 15" alloy wheels feature trims with swirl-effect spokes in silver and black to enhance aerodynamic performance and are fitted with ultra-low rolling resistance tyres. The optional 17" alloy wheels, available on Premium SE offer matt grey inserts and are equipped with tyres that promote agile handling and minimize braking distances

At speeds higher than 5 mph, IONIQ uses the front-mounted radar sensor to monitor vehicles ahead and automatically maintains a pre-set speed and safe distance to the vehicle in front, by regulating the throttle and applying the brakes when needed.

A driver’s airbag, passenger’s airbag, side airbags and curtain airbags protect passengers in the event of a collision.

Around 53% of the IONIQ’s body weight - the skeleton of the car - is made from Advanced High Strength Steel. It’s used in key areas - such as the side frames, cross-members, floor pan and front deformable crash structure
